New Auctions (01/18/06) - Fey Paths and Raku Squeeze

January 18th, 2006 · No Comments

A couple of cool new auctions went up last night; one using an old favorite of mine and one an experiment in stringer, dots, and silvered glass.

Raku Squeeze

Picture of Raku Squeeze set

I’m a huge fan of raku, especially with a little clear partial encasing. The results are always interesting and unpredictable, giving rise to all manner of new and interesting patterns on the beads.

Fey Paths

This is an experiment that was supposed to turn out one way and ended up another. I can’t complain, though, this is a fantastic focal that combines my passion for organic beads with the precision of dots and stringers I’ve been working on for the past few months. I believe the future of my flamework style will be somewhere along the intersection of those two disciplines.

Closing Auctions (01/17/06) - Biorchanic III and Maya Trail

January 17th, 2006 · No Comments

Here are the set’s closing today; both of these turned out really well and I’m pleased to see they will sell.

Biorchanic III

I really love this bead; it has so many textures and details to examine and explore. There will probably be more of these coming, because they are just so much fun to make.

Maya Trail

Another experiment with new techniques, this bead set is covered with stringer work and dots on top of the stringer. I really like the look; it was inspired by the past season of Survivor and ended up almost exactly the way I envisioned it in my head.

New Auctions (01/16/06) - Circus and Lattice

January 17th, 2006 · No Comments

Two new auctions today, this time no focal but two whole sets.

Circus

Picture of Circus bead set

I’ve started experimenting with complex dot patterns over the past few weeks, and Circus was the first set that I really felt was an unqualified success. Lots of dots in very bright, primary colors, stacked to create eye-catching patterns. These are relatively small beads, but there is a ton of detail packed into each bead.

Lattice

This is a new style of bead that I really like. There are layers upon layers of glass in each bead, creating swirling depths of color. The thick layer of encasing is wrapped in a lattice of dark ivory, creating windows of various shapes and sizes, through which the design of the interior bead can be seen.

Jewelry made with Angry Daughters

January 16th, 2006 · No Comments

Just got a link from Gerri of glassrabbit who created this necklace from my Angry Daughters set. It’s always cool to see what others are doing with my work, and I think this is one fo the best examples I’ve seen.  Thanks, Gerri!

New Auctions (01/13/06) - Jaded and Tidal Pools

January 16th, 2006 · No Comments

Here are a couple of new auctions started on Friday the 13th.

Jaded

I like this color combination, it’s sort of funky and really shap. The contrast between the black and green is very strong, making the whole bead vibrant and energetic in appearance.

Tidal Pools

After making the heart pools (see the Current Auctions page), I decided to go back and make another set of tidal pools. I hadn’t made a set like this in a few months, so it was nice to go back to something familiar.

Auctions Closing (01/13/06) - Bittersweet and Goddess Eve

January 13th, 2006 · No Comments

One of my favorite sets and my very first goddess bead are both closing today. The set incorporates a lot of twisted cane and careful dot work, two things that I do not use very often. After how nice this set turned out, however, I’ll probably be doing a lot more with them in the future. Eve is the first goddess I created and it turned out so nice I’m sorry to see it go.

New Auction (01/12/06) - Arachne

January 13th, 2006 · No Comments

Just one new auction today, I’ll be putting up a variety of focals tomorrow I believe, so faithful watchers aren’t missing anything. This set is based on the myth of Arachne, that audacious Greek weaver who challenged Athena herself to a contest. Though myths vary on who won the contest, the ending is always the same - Athena shames Arachne, who hangs herself; feeling sorry for the mortal, Athena then restores her to life as a spider.

Arachne

I particularly like the way the goldstone and intense black contrasted so strongly with the base color of the beads. There’s a lot of webbing and really shiny streaks throughout these beads, giving them a great sense of depth and detail. The natural forms of the beads are very attractive to me, as well. They remind me of stones, polished and carved with the spidery images.

Auctions Ending Today (01/12/06) - Biorchanic II and Spring Blast

January 12th, 2006 · No Comments

Two more auctions closing today:

Spring Blast

Picture of Spring Blast bead set

This set was really fun to make - the twisted cane has a lot of color to it, and the interaction of the green and coral produced some pretty cool border reactions.

Biorchanic II

Picture of Biorchanic II

I really liked how this bead turned out; it was the first biorchanic bead I did that was not pressed or otherwise formed, but grew organically from the underlying design at the core of the bead. This bead has a very layered feel to it - the core has a lot of organic reactions, layered with transparent glass, with patches of metallic, reduced glass, and even more layers of clear and twisted stringer.

New Beads (01/11/06) - Heart Pools and Birth Goddess

January 12th, 2006 · No Comments

Some cool new beads up for auction now. First up:

Heart Pools

Picture of Heart Pools set

A few months back I did a series of beads called Tidal Pools that turned out quite well and were very well-received. When I was thinking about the kinds of beads to make, my wife suggested I try a version of tidal pools incorporating some valentine themes. Though it’s hard to see in this picture, there is a lot of sparkle in the central ‘red spot’ of each bead. Trapped silver under a variety of transparent red colors creates a really rich, ruby glow.

Birth Goddess

Picture of the Birth Goddess bead

I never thought I’d be a big fan of making goddess beads, but recently I’ve been very intrigued by the concept of different sorts of goddesses, most of a dark or angry bent. The Aztec patroness of death in childbirth was the inspiration for this focal; she was known as the snake-woman and helped to create the world of this era from the bones and blood of men and gods from the previous era. I like the darker, more aggressive look of this bead and will probably be making some more in this vein.
